The Italian Ghia designed and Australian made, Ford Capri Convertible, was based on the front wheel drive Australian Ford Laser/Mazda 323 floorpan. It was destined for big things, as it was built in both right-hand and left-hand drive from the outset. The left-hand drive versions being built for the North American market to be sold as Mercury Capris in the USA. Released in Australia in October 1989, the base SA model Capri convertible, designed as a 2 + 2, was initially powered by a SOHC 61kW 1.6 litre EFI. A turbo version of a DOHC 100kW 1.6 litre EFI was also available at its release. A Series II upgrade, in October 1990, saw a DOHC version of the 1.6 litre EFI engine released with increased output to 77kW.
In April 1992, the updated SC model was released firstly, as an "XR2", both Turbo and non-turbo version, then in July 1992, as a "Clubsprint" Turbo and then again in November 1992, as a "Barchetta" non-turbo version. The final updated SE model was released in August 1993 as a "Barchetta", non-turbo version, an "XR2", both turbo and non-turbo versions and finally as a "Clubsprint" version, again, both turbo and non-turbo versions. Production of these vehicles ceased completely for all versions in mid 1994. It was replaced in Australia by the fully imported US-built Ford Probe.
A total of 66,279 Capri Convertibles were built by Ford Australia. Of these, 55,932 were left hand drive units built for the US market, with the remaining 10,347 Capris, being right hand drive models. Of these, 9,787 were sold on the Australian market, 440 were exported to New Zealand and 120 were exported to Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand.
